Looking for cinematographer | History & Aviation

Looking for cinematographer | History & Aviation

(auto-translated from Dutch Dutch)

First Flights is an independent documentary series exploring aviation, history, and humanity's enduring fascination with flight.
Founded and presented by documentary filmmaker and pilot Kate Broug, the series brings unusual stories to an international audience through cinematic, accessible storytelling.

We're currently preparing two short documentary productions in Europe, both exploring the human desire to fly.

Project 1 — Laura Mathews | Nottingham, UK
A short documentary featuring British artist Laura Mathews, whose extraordinary, human-sized wings blur the boundaries between sculpture, engineering, and our fascination with flight.
We'll explore her creative process, the inspiration behind her work, and the personal connection to aviation that has influenced her artistic practice.

Project 2 — Aéroplume | France
A short documentary exploring the Aéroplume, an extraordinary lighter-than-air flying machine that allows a person to propel themselves through the air using wing-like movements.
The film will explore the engineering, imagination, and experience behind this unusual approach to human flight.
Both films will combine interviews, observational footage, and visually compelling sequences, with a focus on curiosity, experimentation, and the people who pursue seemingly impossible ideas.

What we offer
An opportunity to contribute creatively to two unusual documentary projects exploring the intersection of art, engineering, and flight.
You'll work directly with filmmaker and presenter Kate Broug, whose work focuses on aviation, history, and exploration. Kate is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a member of The Explorers Club.
The completed films are intended for publication through First Flights, reaching an established international audience across Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook.
We offer creative involvement in shaping the visual storytelling, portfolio material subject to agreed usage rights, and the possibility of ongoing collaborations on future documentary productions.
Compensation will be discussed based on experience, project scope, and available budget. Agreed travel and production expenses will be covered.

These are relatively small, independent productions, so we're particularly interested in someone who is resourceful, adaptable, and genuinely enjoys discovering unusual stories.
We're also hoping to establish a longer-term creative collaboration for future First Flights projects.

Period
Late October – November 2026.
The productions will involve short trips to Nottingham, UK, and France, with exact filming dates to be confirmed.
Applicants should ideally be based in or near Amsterdam and available for occasional international travel.
