On August 12, 26-year-old composer Matthijs Kieboom won the film music competition of the 'Transatlantyk International Film & Music Festival' in Poznan, Poland. The eight-day festival and competition were founded by Academy Award-winning composer Jan AP Kaczmarek.

Hundreds of composers from around the world participated in the competition, in which each participant had to provide an original composition for two designated films. Ultimately, ten finalists were selected who presented their films to a professional jury during the festival in Poznan. The winner was announced during the closing gala ceremony.

Film composer Matthijs Kieboom won the competition with his two compositions and received $20,000 in prize money. Second place was shared by the Greek/Polish Natali Drosou and the American Garth Neustadter. Third place went to the Polish/French Krzysztof A. Janczak.

For the young composer from Dordrecht, this prize comes at a perfect time. Together with established film composer Martijn Schimmer, he has started a new company. The company, 'Scripted Music', will focus on writing music for foreign film and drama productions. Schimmer and Kieboom jointly composed the music for, among others: 'Me and Mr Jones', 'In Therapie', and 'Foeksia de miniheks'. The two are now putting the finishing touches on the music for the new Sinterklaas film 'Bennie Stout', which will have its premiere as a family film at the Utrecht Film Festival.

The jury of the Transatlantyk Film Music Competition consisted of renowned professionals:

- Peter Golub, composer (Frozen River, The Great Debaters) Director of Film Music Program at Sundance Institute
- Jan AP Kaczmarek, composer (Finding Neverland, Unfaithful), Jury President
- Christopher Young, composer (Shipping News, Spider-Man 3)
