Casting call – short admission film

(auto-translated from Dutch)

Hi! We're Joris (director), Vigo, and Rira (producers), and we're currently working on a short film for our admission to the Netherlands Film Academy.

This year, all three of us are taking a course at the Film Academy, which gives us access to a large network of young filmmakers, professional guidance, and equipment.

Synopsis
When 17-year-old Daan loses his mother, Maud, the family is suddenly thrown off balance. Maud had always been the link between Daan, his father, Jan, and his brother, Olivier, who looks much more like Jan. Without her, the family is torn apart: Daan feels alone, unheard by the two men who are so different from him. Daan wants to bridge the gap between himself and his father, but doesn't know how, because the two are so different.
During dinner after their mother's funeral, these differences become painfully apparent, culminating in a heated conflict. The chasm between father and son seems wider than ever.
But when Daan and Jan discover that they share a love for the musician Charles Aznavour, this seems to be the beginning of a new connection between them.

What do we offer?
This project is unpaid and is made entirely out of passion, but with professional dedication and a dedicated team! We do, of course, offer a delicious lunch during the shoot, and travel expenses can be agreed upon.

Description
For this passion project we are still looking for enthusiastic actors:
Roles:
• Daan (17-24 years)
• Olivier (17-24 years)
• Jan (45-60 years)

Daan
Daan is a 17-year-old boy. He's quiet, creative, and modest, but finds it difficult to be social. He doesn't have many friends at school, which he sometimes finds difficult. He doesn't enjoy learning and often struggles to concentrate.
Daan is a dreamer. He loves writing, listens to music, and reads a lot. His favorite artist is Charles Aznavour, a French singer. When he was little, his father always played the French singer in the car, and that has always stuck with him.
Daan is a mama's boy. He felt safe with her. Since her death, he often feels alone.
He's unsure what to think of his father; his opinion of him keeps changing. On the one hand, he thinks he's an arrogant jerk, but on the other, he has a lot of respect for him and looks up to him. He'd like to improve his relationship with his father, but he doesn't know how to achieve that.

Olivier
Olivier is a 19-year-old boy and Daan's brother. He's loud, confident, and arrogant. He studies finance and control in Rotterdam but still lives at home. He really wants to join the student body next year.
Olivier plays rugby at a high level and likes to show it to the rest of the world. He's a lot like his father and gets along well with him. Deep down, he already feels superior to his father, but he doesn't show it.
Of course, he was momentarily devastated by the loss of his mother, but according to Olivier, the family must quickly look to the future and not dwell too much on the grief.

Jan
Jan is a 55-year-old father. He's polite and serious, a man of few words. He has a good job at the bank, where he's worked for a long time. He's a Christian and wants to pass this on to his sons. He exudes authority. Jan used to vote for the SGP (Christian Democratic Party) but has recently switched to the VVD (People's Party for Freedom and Democracy).
He listens to Charles Aznavour every day, especially now that his wife has passed away. It's his way of escaping reality, though he'll never let his sons know this. He doesn't want them to see any weakness in him.
Jan loved his wife dearly, and doesn't know how to behave now that she is no longer there.
He gets along well with Olivier, but less so with Daan. His wife always provided the connection between the three of them. He does feel responsible for improving his bond with Daan, but has no idea how.
