Happy Ever After is a short fiction film about love, anticipation and the moment when a
woman decides to no longer play the "supporting role" in someone else's story. The film plays
takes place in a world that initially seems realistic, but gradually transforms into something
fake, like a backdrop that turns against the main character.
The story follows Julia, a young woman who goes on a seemingly innocent Halloween date
has with Pim, a charming but superficial man. What starts as an awkward
evening full of clichés, slowly turns into a nightmare in which Julia realizes that she is in a
kind of script that is written by others. Pim doesn't seem like just any man, but
rather an actor trying to act out a pre-planned romantic scene. When
When Julia becomes aware of this, she tries to regain control and changes Pims
carefully directed love story in a horror film.
The film plays with expectations, both in story and form. We start in the genre of the
romantic comedy, with recognizable situations and light-hearted dialogue, but gradually it changes
the tone. The camerawork becomes more oppressive, the editing more restless, the atmosphere
alienating. The result is a film that forces the viewer to doubt what is real, just
like Julia herself.
Happy Ever After is therefore not just a film about a woman and a man, but about the roles
that society expects of them and what happens when someone refuses to play along.
