Toekijken is a Dutch-language arthouse short film of 12 to 15 minutes, written and directed by Joël in 't Veld as the graduation film for his studies at ROC Rijn IJssel. The story follows Daan, a 21-year-old who deals drugs to pay for his mother's medical expenses. Not by choice, but because he sees no other way out. When his best friend Luuk becomes addicted to the drugs Daan supplies him and eventually dies, Daan is the one there. The film revolves around guilt and grief, written in a somber, realistic tone without moralizing. Shooting takes place in and around Arnhem with a small crew of three to five people. An actor aged 19 to 25 for the lead role of Daan. Daan is quiet by nature; he does not talk about what is bothering him and shows little to the outside world. Yet, he is present throughout the entire film, in almost every scene. We are looking for someone who can carry that weight without faking it, someone with whom you feel that something is burning beneath the surface without him having to name it. Physically: lean build, dark hair, a face that has seen better days. Acting experience is a plus but not a strict requirement. Essential, however: credibility in silence and the willingness to be available for multiple days.
