Toekijken is a Dutch-language arthouse short film of 12 to 15 minutes, written and directed by Joël in 't Veld as the graduation film for his studies at ROC Rijn IJssel. The film is produced under the name Different Motion Films. The story follows Daan, a 21-year-old who deals drugs to pay for his mother's medical expenses. Not by choice, but because he sees no other way out. When his best friend Luuk becomes addicted to the drugs Daan supplies him and eventually dies, Daan is the one there. The film revolves around guilt and grief, written in a somber, realistic tone without moralizing. Shooting takes place in and around Arnhem with a small crew of three to five people. Description
A boy of about 19 for a small role as Daan's customer. The scene takes place in a parking garage at night, damp concrete, a single fluorescent tube on the ceiling. The customer walks up to Daan; they do not look at each other. A bag of cocaine changes hands, a folded bundle of bills is returned. Then they both walk away in opposite directions. No words, no glances. Just a transaction. The role requires no dialogue, but someone who carries the situation credibly. Acting experience is not required.
